Save the Birkbeck Tavern campaigners preparing for one-day music festival Birkfest
CAMPAIGNERS bidding to save a popular pub have announced details of a one-day music festival they hope will raise awareness of the cause.
The Birkbeck Tavern in Langthorne Road, Leytonstone, will play host to Birkfest – a free one-day music festival – on Sunday (October 28).
The pub was put on the market for £575,000 after owner Sarumdale Ltd went into administration in June
Worried that most potential buyers making enquiries were property developers, regulars launched the Save the Birkbeck Tavern campaign – and more than 2,000 people have so far signed a petition calling on Waltham Forest Council to reject any future planning applications to turn the venue into flats.
Petition organiser Jess Dickenson, 33, has helped plan Birkfest.
She said: “We have got some really, really good bands. The point of the day is to showcase the pub as the thriving community pub that it is.”
An unknown bidder, believed to be a publican, has made an offer on the premises.
“The representatives of the campaign are really eager to get in touch with whoever that is.
“We’d like them to come along and see for themselves what the possibilities are.”
Birkfest will begin at 3pm. Acts already confirmed include Simon Onions and local folk punk band Steve White and the Protest Family.
